The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is the central organization dedicated to advocating for and representing the interests of First Nations in Manitoba. Established in 1988, the AMC serves as the collective voice for all 63 First Nations in the province, upholding their rights, promoting their sovereignty, and enhancing the quality of life within their communities. The AMC addresses issues impacting First Nations, including governance, health, education, environmental stewardship, and economic development.
At the helm of the AMC is Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, a trailblazer who made history as the first female Grand Chief of the AMC. Her victory in a historic by-election was a testament to her leadership, marked by a collaborative and inclusive approach, and her unwavering commitment and advocacy for Manitoba’s First Nations. This dedication earned her a re-election victory for a three-year term on the first ballot.
Grand Chief Merrick is a passionate and unwavering proponent of economic development within Manitoba’s First Nations Communities. Recognizing the pivotal role of economic growth in fostering self-sufficiency and improving the quality of life for her communities, she has been a driving force behind initiatives that support entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainable economic opportunities. Under her leadership, the AMC has prioritized strategies that empower First Nations to take control of their financial futures, advocating for increased access to resources, investment, and partnerships that benefit all First Nations communities and their members.
Grand Chief Merrick is deeply committed to leveraging First Peoples Economic Growth Fund (FPEGF) to drive economic development within Manitoba’s First Nations communities. Recognizing the critical role that FPEGF plays in fostering entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainable growth, she actively advocates for its utilization to empower First Nations and support their economic self-sufficiency. Under her leadership, there is a strong focus on ensuring that FPEGF resources are effectively used to create lasting economic opportunities, enabling communities to thrive and achieve greater economic independence.
The First Peoples Economic Growth Fund extends its gratitude to the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs for their unwavering commitment to FPEGF and their steadfast support in advancing the economic development and prosperity of all Manitoba First Nations communities and their members.
